Favorite beach in Corsica
We had a good introduction to Sardinia – we finally caught a fish! We had been dragging a lure behind the boat pretty much from Germany with no success. So it was quite a surprise on the final night of our passage from Menorca when we noticed the rod dive just as we were sitting down for dinner. A fair bit of panic ensued; trying to slow the boat down, finding the gaff, teaching Sabina what a gaff is 🙂 Anyway, 30 minutes later we had a quite nice tuna in the boat! And 10 minutes after that we were eating tuna sashimi!
We also had our first real scare on the boat. About 30 miles out from Sardinia we noticed that the power in service batteries was getting super low, and no amount of engine charging would bring them up. Eventually they died and we were left with no power for our main navigation system. This meant we navigated by our backup apps on our phones and tablets. In the end it was fine and we made it to Alghero …but it was a bit of a scare. When on dock we discovered it was just a loose wire and fuse that meant only sporadic charge from the solar panels and none from the engine.
Alghero was a great introduction to Sardinia and the month ahead. It has a cool walled old town and some nice restaurants. On the first day we tucked in to our first pasta – a fregola which is a local style and absolutely delicious – and got acquainted with the local wine and gelato.
After a couple of days of eating and drinking too much in Alghero we started making our way slowly up the western coast of Sardinia.
