Hello!
We are an Aussie (Daniel) / American (Sabina) couple, taking some time out career-wise to sail from Europe to Australia. We met while both working in Brazil, and after a few years of living back in Australia decided to pack it all up and sail the world!
In April we picked up our boat, Thinking About It (yes! That’s the boats name), and have been living aboard ever since. Our plan is to spend the European summer exploring the Med, then head across the Atlantic to explore the Caribbean, go through the Panama Canal, and then finally cruise the South Pacific back to Australia 🙂
Thinking About It is a Hanse 455, which we picked up from the Hanse factory in Greifswald, Germany (bloody cold place btw). She is 45 foot and has a few fancy features like a self tacking jib, electric winches and the all important teak decks. Should be a comfy home 🙂
Daniel grew up on Sydney’s northern beaches and first got the sailing bug as a Cub Scout – sailing a Heron on Narabeen Lakes. Eventually he graduated to yachts, catching the cruising bug through bareboat charters. Following too much work misery (the kind only a management consultant knows), he decided to follow a dream and sail the world. He loves being outdoors and has been known to be late on occasion, making cruising the perfect lifestyle.
Sabina grew up in that sailing epicentre – the Rocky Mountains of the US of A! Warming to the idea slowly (she had to learn to swim), countless sails with Daniel in Sydney harbour eventually won her over. Also a former management consultant, she recognised that life is short and there is value in trading PowerPoint decks for teak ones, at least for now. With a few passages now under her belt she has made the transition from ‘Chardonnay sailor’ to Co-captain!
We now spend our days exploring the islands, beaches and little towns we pass, and dealing with the day to day challenges of living in a small, mechanically complex house. We love experiencing how the culture, wine, and cuisine of each place we stop is unique. We also love reading as we sail and debating whether Sabina will need to become an Australian (or Canadian) citizen if / when Trump is elected.
